Who I am.

Jim Parker MSc (Conservation of Buildings)
City & Guilds (Carpentry and Joinery)

I am the son of an architectural designer and developer, and have been immersed in the building industry for my entire working life. My journey began after leaving school in 1987, when I completed a carpentry apprenticeship and spent 15 years working on-site across a variety of new and old building projects. Throughout this time, my passion was ignited by the challenge and complexity of working on historic and listed buildings.

After my carpentry career, I had the privilege of
managing a small NHBC registered building company for 12 years. It was during this time that I developed a keen interest in the planning side of the industry. Under the guidance of my father, I learned how to draft
architectural drawings and became well-versed in planning policies and regulations.

When the building company eventually closed, I decided to focus solely on planning and conservation. A pivotal moment in my career came when I was working on a
listed building contract, during which I spoke with a Conservation Officer about further qualifications.
This conversation led me to pursue an MSc in Building Conservation at Anglia Ruskin University, where I graduated in April 2017.

Since then, I have worked as a Built Heritage Consultant, securing both Planning and Listed Building consents for clients, as well as providing heritage advice and reports for architectural firms. Additionally, I collaborate with estate agents, offering guidance to potential buyers of
listed and old buildings regarding conservation, repairs, and the potential for extensions and interior adaptations.

The majority of my work has come through
recommendations, often accompanied by feedback on how difficult it was to find me—hence the creation of this website.

My career path has granted me a unique combination of practical and theoretical knowledge of both old and new buildings. This ensures that my proposals are not only feasible but sensitive to the historical significance of each structure I work with.
